Will my insurance cover accent modification?

Accent Modification may not qualify. It is in your best interest to check with your provider ahead of time. Some employers may pay for your Accent Modification program or a percentage of it. Ask your employer if there is a Professional Development Program and if an Accent Modification Program would qualify.

Will my employer pay for Accent Training?

Many employers value the benefits of improving their employees’ communication skills. Speak to your human resources department to determine if there are funds available to you for professional development.

Will my accent come back if I stop working on it?

You will be learning specific strategies to enhance your pronunciation of Standard American English. The goal is to become automatic and habituated to your new way of speaking; however, you will be able to use your former accent when and if you choose to do so. This is called “code switching”.

Is a Canadian accent similar to a Standard American English accent?

There are variations to both Canadian accents and American accents. A neutral accent heard in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is virtually identical to the Standard American English accent.

How long is the Accent Reduction Program?

We offer three options: the initial assessment plus one session (focusing on your main sound concerns), the initial assessment plus 7 sessions, or, our most popular package, the initial assessment plus 13 sessions. The 13 week program aims for results that will produce the most meaningful changes in your daily speech.

Why is English pronunciation so difficult?

Pronunciation is often not taught, even when you are learning a language. You must first learn to hear the sounds of English before you can produce them. To further complicate matters, English words are not necessarily pronounced the way they are spelled. Pronunciation requires skill (that means practice) not just knowledge.

Is there homework?

As with all types of language learning, practice is a key component for change. The Accent Modification Program will require a commitment on your part. It is recommended that each participant anticipate 60 minutes of practice daily to maximize the effectiveness of their training.

What results can I expect?

The Compton P-ESL program has been meticulously researched. Results expected are a 50-80% improvement in speech errors with the recommended daily practice.

How long will it take to reduce my accent?

The program is designed to build on skills exponentially. You will begin to notice results as early as the second session, as new sounds will be introduced. Practice will enhance habituation of your new skills. As new sounds and complexity are practiced, improvements in conversational speech will begin.

Will accent modification training affect my first language?

No. Accent modification training provides you with skills to change your English production at will. You can use or not use the strategies as you so desire. Your first language will not be impacted.

How do I know if I need to modify my accent?

If you are proficient in English, but still experience frequent misunderstandings, lack of self-confidence during speaking, inability to convey important ideas, and this is causing you anxiety, then our services are right for you.

What kind of English pronunciation will I learn?

We teach a standard North American English pronunciation, which is the dialect most often used in professional settings and North American television and radio. While there are subtle variations between standard Canadian and American accents, they are almost indistinguishable.
